Representatives from five companies attended Empower Training Services' Electrical Safe Work Practices Seminar, hosted by Elm Electrical, Inc., in East Hartford, Conn., on September 21, 2018.

Led by Joe DeMonte, ABM Franchising Group's Director of Technical Training and Support, the seminar addressed how building owners and facility managers can address insurance obligations, protect and extend the lifespan of electrical distribution equipment, while maintaining uninterrupted electrical service and a safe environment. It also addressed how employees working near energized equipment can stay safe, and how to properly respond to an emergency situation and mitigate risks.

Tina Romano, a Sales Representative at Elm Electrical, Inc., attended the seminar. She praised DeMonte's knowledge of electrical safety and his ability to present the dangers it presents in a relatable way. She said it helped highlight the importance of implementing a preventive maintenance program to maintain a safe environment.

The presentation was eye-opening for some audience members, who may not have realized they could be at risk for dangerous situations, such as Arc Flash exposure, Romano said.

"Joe really brought to light the importance, and scary realities, associated with arc flash incidents and arc blasts," she said. "He was very knowledgeable about these topics, and presented this information in a fun and interactive way."

Romano said the seminar provided attendees with a variety issues they could encounter and hopes they will use the knowledge to look for ways to improve safety at their facilities.

"We received great responses from those in attendance," Romano said. "It was really catered to the specific needs of the audience, and Joe was able to answer electrical safety questions related to their individual lines of work."
